If English is not your first language . . .

What's the best way of learning another language? Well, learning is easy if you're a child living in the country but for the rest of us it has to be a conscious study. You need to know the rules of the language - its grammar - if you're not to make serious mistakes; you need to build up a vocabulary not by learning lists but by using the words in context and you need to give a lot of time to pronunciation. Many of us having learnt a language at school find we're quite unable to understand native speakers, and they us, when we go to their country. People learn at different rates and in different ways and some have a greater aptitude for language than others but a little study and often is a good rule. We've all had the experience of cramming for an exam and forgetting most of it the day after.

There are several ways in which I can help you speak the language better. If you live within an hour's travel of Twickenham, where I live, I can provide face- to- face tutoring either individually or to a group.

I can also teach you, computer to computer. We can converse normally using a headset (earphones and microphone) with, preferably, a web cam. The computers built-in microphone and loudspeakers are not suitable for this purpose. Phone calls computer to computer through Skype are free.   All you have to do is to find Skype on your browser and register.     I can also e-mail you notes to help you with a particular difficulty.

If you need proof reading of something you have written you can send me the text as an e-mail attachment.      By proof reading I mean correcting grammar, spelling, syntax and explaining current usage.   I have helped several post- graduate students in this way but it is for you to decide what you want to say - not me.

If you are coming to Britain to study, your English needs to be much better than for a simple visit.  It is obviously harder to give a new subject your full attention while, at the same time, learning English. Your essays may get lower marks because the examiner could not understand what you were trying to say.   A student may even fail a course simply because his English was not good enough.

You will want to know how much my help will cost you.   It's difficult to say without knowing what you want.   But it costs  nothing to e-mail me at ben@francisgb.myzen.co.uk.   Payment for my services can be made through PAYPAL which guarantees security for both of us.

PS When you e- mail me please tell me which time zone you are in.
